. . . You of little faith . . .

Jesus uses these three words 13 times in 6 verses (NIV)

you of little faith

Matthew 14:22–31 (NIV)

Jesus Walks on the Water

14:22–33pp—Mk 6:45–51; Jn 6:16–21
14:34–36pp—Mk 6:53–56

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

My Thoughts:

The first thought which comes to mind, I believe is what so many others say.  When Peter took his attention away from Christ, he began to sink.  Moreover, so much of that is true.  I would guess that most of us, when we feel we are struggling most, if we look back we had a gradual reduced role of Christ in our lives.

A second thought which hits me, one that Christ had even spoke of, is isn’t it amazing how the disciples had Christ right with them, in the boat and more, but still had troubling getting past all the limitations of trust we either are seemingly born with or learn as we grow into adults.

There is so much to gather from the Bible, but sometimes I really like to bring it down to its simplest form.  We can try to be a “Christian” all the time or simpler, we can always work on putting our faith in him, focusing on him and letting the outcomes take care of themselves.  Remember the number one commandment or greatest:

Matthew 22:37–38 (NIV)

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’  38 This is the first and greatest commandment.

If we can just practice these – I truly believe we cannot worry about the rest.

Amen

  5. I enjoyed this read. Always a good reminder that faith is the currency we need to survive. It’s startling that even with Jesus in the boat…hearts faltered. I’m taking heed. (I feel a poem coming on! lol!)

  6. The whole fullness of the Christian life comes from “loving God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength”! So amen! When we immerse ourselves into that pursuit, we will find that love will compel us towards serving our brothers and sisters in the manner that Christ served them; we will find ourselves compelled towards defending the defenseless; we will find ourselves compelled to resist sin and pursue holiness in Christ. Everything comes from an overflowing love for our glorious Father!

I also wanted to say thank you for following my exposition blog and I hope you to hear your thoughts as we continue digging into 1st John!

  10. I have faith, and I started a new blog to keep my mind on Jesus. Although, I am in a horrible situation, I am homeless, and I know Jesus was. It’s just hard not being able to find a job, and go to college and be homeless. I have faith, but I am in the wilderness for sure. Bless you for your blog, Jackie 🙂

    2. I can’t imagine how trying it must be for someone to be homeless. This must certainly be a great trial of faith for you. I pray that you will somehow manage to find a good job with somebody’s help and an offer for a place to stay until you do. I’ll keep you in my prayers. Remember, God may sometimes seem indifferent to our needs and too distant from us when we cry out to Him, but He will never abandon us as long as we continue to trust Him. He alone sees the whole picture of our lives, and what He permits, despite how perplexing it may seem to us, is all for a greater good. God is good, so all the suffering we may have to endure can’t compare with the glory that is to come for all who love and place their hope in Him. Keep in mind God will never subject us to a trial that is too great to bear, however terrible it might be. Once we stop praying for the graces we need to persevere in faith because of despair and lose our sight on the Lord, Satan has a strangle hold on us. Our spiritual needs and eternal destiny are what matter most. Pray all the harder, and resist the Devil who attacks more aggressively when we pray in time of temporal need. Don’t let the Dragon gain the upper hand. He is our worst enemy – not life’s circumstances.

    1. Sorry for the long delay. I am hoping to continue my walk through the Bible. I am currently liking to compare the same story from the Gospels. It is interesting how they differ and provide a 3-d view of the event. Although there are some who believe because the stories are not the same, it means the Bible is contradictory or in accurate of the events.
